'Local Heroes: In the Line of Fire' takes a look behind the scenes of one of the most dangerous professions in the world: that of firefighter. More than 400 firefighters including officers, divers, climbers and ambulance officers watch over the safety of Ghent and Antwerp. They are ready 24/7 to pull out immediately. But also the emergency center, where the first emergency call comes in, and the outposts of the Ghent and Antwerp fire brigade, are of crucial importance. For over one hundred shifts, a camera crew followed every intervention and training of the Ghent and Antwerp fire brigade. And where the camera crew has to stay at a distance, the bodycams and helmet cameras of the firefighters take over. This is life as it really is.

In 'My Superhero', kids introduce us to the hero of their family: someone with an exciting profession that speaks to your imagination. We follow our hero for one day, doing his or her job. ‘Wrapper’ Charlotte, together with eight Geonauts, camp together and learn how people live in the rest of the world. Through their geonaut tower, they connect with Sien, Leonard and Sander, who travelled to different places in the world. The Geonauts also want to improve the world themselves. They carry out assignments that they receive from the ‘wrappers’ in the South. The better they perform, the more puzzle pieces they earn. Do they manage to complete the puzzle of the globe at the end of their camp?

FLYING DOCTORS

Three young doctors, one pilot, and a Geronimo camera crew set out on an unforgettable road trip with a bush plane through East Africa. Destination: the Virunga National Park in DR Congo. Sam Proesmans and Toon Van Genechten, two doctors known from the show 'Convoi exceptionnel', and befriended doctor Filip Couturier, together with adventurer Anthony Caere, brought a Cessna 206 to the oldest nature park in Africa. The plane is used for medical evacuations for the Rangers of the park. They are often the target of poachers and illegal foresters. At times like that, the aircraft that brought the foursome to the Congo can make the difference between life and death.

MISSIE MOSANGO

Six Flemish youths, on the threshold of their future as a social worker, spend two weeks traveling to a hospital in the heart of Congo. The young idealists are confronted with Congolese and African reality.

 

CONVOI ECEPTIONNEL

Three future doctors leave for Tanzania to drop off an ambulance in the vicinity of Arusha. They will donate their converted jeep to a local hospital. Sam, Ben and Toon are currently doing internships in different hospitals. Sam, for example, works in South Africa. At the end of June, they will fly to Tanzania to drive the ambulance from Dar Es Salaam to the hospital in Arusha. The ambulance is stacked with medical equipment which the young doctors-to-be will put to good use in Tanzania.

A five-part series of reportages in which young reporter Sofie Peeters visits five Flemish people who are trying to make a difference somewhere in the world. Their work is often nothing more than a drop in the ocean, but for a few people it can make a world of difference. Sofie lives with them for a week and tries to find out what drives them to travel so far from home, in order to help others.
